Hello friend,
My mother may be gone, but the memories of her smile, her laughter, and her sense of humor remain. She never met a stranger and talked to everyone.
Was she perfect? None of us is, but she graced the world with her strong will, determination, and a soprano voice that made music come alive for me.
I think of my mother often. On Mother’s Day in the United States, we honor the women who gave us life or chose us through adoption and raised us with love.
If your mom or someone who mothered you is still close by, give her a hug, a call, or a memory of what she has given you. Those are the best gifts. I gathered a few thoughts that others have shared about their mothers.
Fred Rogers: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
Ruth Bader Ginsburg: “My mother told me to be a lady. And, for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.”
Mitch Albom: “I don't know what it is about food your mother makes for you, especially when it's something that anyone can make - pancakes, meat loaf, tuna salad - but it carries a certain taste of memory.”
Maya Angelou: “To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power.”
Mark Twain: “My mother had a slender small body, but a large heart—a heart so large that everybody’s grief and everybody’s joy found welcome in it, and hospitable accommodation.”
Life, for my mom, wasn’t always blue skies and rainbows. Pain and loss of children, of her precious memories, cast long shadows. But I prefer to keep close those moments I watched and learned how to be kind, generous, creative, and if I must admit it, maybe a little stubborn.
As much as I try to imitate my mother's virtuous qualities, there are moments when I lose sight of love and gratitude.
Writer and podcaster, Kelly Corrigan, offers some thoughts on what matters most because to love is to be brave.
Remembering mothers in song: Mama’s Song, Carrie Underwood; The Mother, Brandi Carlile; and Mother, Michael Bublé
“Sooner or later, we all quote our mothers.”
— Bernard Williams
“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it’s a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.”
— Erma Bombeck
