Ocean waves beckon
A six-word story
waves call me.
Now and then, I like to savor a good memory and conjure words.
As the Texas sun continued to beat down on all living things this week, I longed for the beach. I played around with why I love ocean waves, salt spray, and the call of laughing gulls and dared myself to tell the story in six words.
I’ve taken this challenge before. Condensing thoughts forces you to consider each word, the meanings, sounds, and order of the words to capture the intent.
I’ve heard the artist in our family talk about painting with a limited palette. Placing constraints creates a sandbox with parameters but endless possibilities.
I miss the ocean, but I’ve learned to look for moments that call me to stretch my creative muscles. That might be writing, designing my garden, making music, or trying my hand at British scones.
The waves are always calling.
And what about you? In six words, what calls you?
I believe in the three healing powers of the ocean.
“When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused.”
— Rainer Maria Rilke
“. . . there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.”
— Sarah Kay
Find a little wonder this week. I’ll be dreaming of sea foam, blue skies, and rolling waves whispering in my ear.
