Hello friend,
Children know how to notice. Adults? We forget to look and listen to the sights and sounds of everyday life.
If we allow it, the days, months, years, and decades pass without stopping to enjoy the small moments, the songs of birds, and the rustling of the wind. Our surroundings become comfortable, easy to take for granted, and slowly become dull and mundane.
My eyes follow the rays of sun coming through the window. The wind blows the fallen blooms of the azaleas, and shadows lace the lawn. The clear sky doesn’t offer any clouds to spawn my imagination, but when they appear, my thoughts run wild.
Sitting on the swing, I notice—a Mallard couple waddle up looking for seed on the ground, white egrets swoop and stand, the wind whispers through the new leaves of the black willow, clouds form and reshape as the sun sets, a spider has left a web dangling beside me.
My favorite cloud sky? Sunsets—oh, those grab the heart and make me pause in gratitude.
This week, friends, what will you notice?
Make this a week of wonder.
We always face choices, and the road less traveled gave me the best life.
Austin Kleon never fails at inspiring his readers. He wrote about a quilt made of days and shared his collages in a video.
When I started thinking about this week’s newsletter, Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now wormed its way into my head. You might also enjoy Get Off of My Cloud by the Rolling Stones.
“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm but to add color to my sunset sky.”
—Rabindranath Tagore
“Each day is like a panel in a quilt. Some days are ugly and some days are raw and some days are chaotic and some days are colorful and some days are orderly, but if you keep adding them up, they turn into something.”
—Austin Kleon
