Hello friends,
Spring has moments of sheer joy and beauty—warmer days, blue skies, and abundant blooms.
Mixed in with all that glory comes pounding rain, pervasive wind, pollen, and pruning. All of us need nurturing and protection, even plants.
I lost one of my treasured Althea plants in the dreadful freeze of February 2021. Two survived, but they lived in a space crowded by a palm tree and rose bush.
Someone needed to move for everyone to flourish.
We chose to transplant the Althea closest to the palm. The remaining plants would have breathing room. In turn, we would gain a prime view of Alfie’s beautiful flowers. Yes, I’ve been known to name plants and cars.
Alfie suffered a traumatic move, losing deep roots and exposure to the sun and wind during the move. We tenderly placed him in his new home and showered him with compost, organic fertilizer, water, and comforting words.
I know how Alfie felt. I’m guessing you have also had times in your life when circumstances uprooted you from your comfort zone.
Change. If you’re like me you have this ongoing love-hate relationship with the natural and inevitable transformation constantly taking place.
We see it in our bodies, the lines that creep onto our faces. Friends move away or become closer. People we love leave this world. Flowers bloom and fade.
We can’t stop change, but we can nurture ourselves and others. Every day, several times a day, we water Alfie sending moisture deep into the battered roots and sprinkling his leaves with more refreshing drops.
I believe simple acts of kindness can help us weather the significant and mundane changes that envelop our lives. Don’t we all need a little sprinkle of smiles or support?
On the bright side, change can bring growth, sunrises and sunsets, blooms, and colorful fall leaves. The kaleidoscope of life ever evolves.
Change often feels like living on the edge, but as James Taylor reminds us, “the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.”
Lori Gottlieb shares how changing your story can change your life, because “stories are the way we make sense of our lives.”
Life is precious and ever-changing when you only have 100 Years (Five for Fighting).
“And that is how change happens. One gesture. One person. One moment at a time.”
― Libba Bray, The Sweet Far Thing
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
― Lao Tzu
Find a little wonder this week, enjoy change, and never fear living on the edge and grasping every precious moment.
With gratitude,
Kathryn

Thanks for reading. Feel free to forward this weekly note to someone who would enjoy a few words of inspiration.
Or if you received this from a friend and want to receive my weekly post,
I’ve been pondering transitions (and change!) myself this week. How do we mark those transitions? Do we have enough rituals and milestones to mark change and metamorphosis? How can we lean into change in a way that recognises our fears and allows us to sit with them as well as embracing the positives of change? I’m feeling this as my body is telling me I’m in transition to menopause as I head towards 50.
Thanks for another wonderful piece of writing ✨💖😊
